Our Stories - Spring 2020 - Covid 19

Betty K - WHAT I DID DURING COVID 19!!
When I first heard we were on lock-down, I thought, no problem, this is a good time for Spring house cleaning. That thought lasted about 2 rooms and 3 days. I soon found myself in my sewing room.
I finished a couple of UFO’s, made a lap-size top using scrap 2” squares, made masks, some doll clothes, and a disappearing 9 patch star top for QOV. I have been wanting to try this pattern for awhile. Now was the time. It turned out well. Now I have a lot of half square triangles to figure out what to do with. I also started a rather detailed cross stitch piece that I hope to have done for a Christmas gift. My latest project has been to work on the Photo Memory books I have started for each of my 6 grandsons. Big project with 100’s of photos to go through. I still have to contend with the big box of Red/White/Blue scraps that was left at my front door one day.
In between all of this I have taken time to think of the number of things I am grateful for, such as my family, friends, my health, etc. The list goes on and on. I am so grateful I have the time, talent, and resources to help those who are in need. For our first get-together when this is all over, I think we need to SOCIALIZE, talk to each other face to face, and of course, have a giant Show N Tell.
We will get through this together and all be better persons. I can’t wait to see you all.

Sylvia L - I have had time during this “Quarantine” to reflect on many things. After a cancer diagnosis in October of incurable cancer, Jerry’s brother Mark passed away on March 14. Then on March 21 Jerry took a ride in an ambulance to AGH and I had to stay home. He is doing well but I really appreciate day to day activities and the value of friendships. Life is very fragile and treasuring each day is so important. So on this sunny day you will find me on the deck saying thank you.
2. I would probably have stocked up on more fabric because I have honestly depleted my stash making masks and the order from JoAnn’s which I ordered on April 3 is still not here.
Our freezer was full and our son shopped for us for four weeks until I figured out how to order on line and pick up. Conquered that finally.
As for quilting-- I finished a quilt for my daughter and her husband, made 155 masks (yes I kept count) and once that JoAnn’s order gets in, I will make some more. I finished a top for QOV, made 20 bags for Beads of Care, completed the first row of the row by row quilt Stacy sent to us and now I am knitting soap Sacs because a friend has a funded project going to supply soap and soap sacs to homeless shelters. She brought me a big cone of Peaches and Cream cotton yarn which I have now named the “the burning bush” because not matter how many I knit, the cone stays the same size. I also think I figured out how to use a quilting ruler to square up a block thanks to my favorite Quilt Doctor, Betty Kania.
3. When we are free to roam again, I can’t wait to see my friends and just talk.
4. I think we should have a giant show and tell to share what we have completed while home with our machines.

Donna M - I made this quilt as a theme quilt for our show featuring the Log Cabin pattern. I quilted it during this “lock down” time and decided to name it “Pandemic 2020.” The black represents anxiety, fear and the unknown future. The white represents hope, love, courage and faith. The Log Cabin block represents home, family, safety, security and sanctuary. While quilting this, I had lots of time to reflect on the many blessings I have, (one being a large stash and UFOs to keep me busy!)
I finally got to make my doggie quilt for Quilts of Valor during this time at home. Betty gave me this fabric and said, “Do something with it!" So I did, about a year later. She knew how I love dogs. With the addition from my stash, I get to do another one with the leftover fabric. I designed the pattern and enjoyed the challenge. I hope to get to meet the Veteran “handler” who receives this quilt as it really means so much to me and hopefully to him or her also.

Sandy S - I got a nice Coronavirus 19 time capsule booklet from Staples the other day. I had my grandkids fill it out. The 11 year old stated that he learned to”not eat bats or French bulldogs”. They had just gotten a French bulldog a few weeks prior. Needless to say, China is not one of the countries that he would want to visit.
Tracey Z - Feeling lucky to be retired so the threat of job loss or layoff hasn't affected me. I'm glad I'm not the one making the decision about restarting the economy vs. spreading Covid.
The hardest part is not being able to visit my 95 year old mother who is in a facility. If there is a positive, it is that she has advanced dementia so she doesn't realize that she hasn't seen me for weeks and has to have all her meals in her room. Also my grandson missed his senior year baseball season and graduation will be virtual, I guess. However, I have gotten a LOAD of quilting done. My husband is quite happy to see me head to the sewing room so he can watch what he WANTS on the TV. How to celebrate our first meeting back?? --- Certainly we will need an extended Show 'n Tell and a perhaps a Fat Yard instead of a Fat Quarter (for socializing--not eating --if you have been snacking and stress-eating as much as I have). OK - on to the pics Do you remember Nancy J's Funky Flock quilt from our last show? I loved it and finally got around to trying to make one. |
